Sergeant William Kirkpatrick

 

 

William Kirkpatrick was born on 16 April 1884 at Ballywilliam, Clough, County Down, son of stonemason John Kirkpatrick and his wife Susan (nee Emerson).

He enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 2 and 5 March 1909 (No.299).

Kirkpatrick embarked for France with C Squadron on 20 August 1914 and saw action on the Retreat from Mons and Advance to the Aisne, during which he was badly injured. According to the Belfast News-Letter on 12 October 1914:

... W. Kilpatrick [sic], Moneycarra, Dundrum, who has two brothers in the service, is now in a Liverpool hospital. His charger was shot and fell upon him, and he lay for some time before he was picked up.

Kirkpatrick was discharged as no longer physically fit for war service on 28 June 1915.
